Interesting gambling terms explained!

In casinos, comps are complementary services and items given to players to encourage them to gamble more. The most basic of comps are free food and drinks, but high rollers may receive limo rides, entire hotel suits, private jet services and hostess services.

Vigorish (from the Russian term выигрыш, meaning winnings)

Vigorish is the term for the amount a bookmaker charges for taking a bet from a player.

Gambler`s conceit

Gambler`s conceit is a term coined by behavioral economist David J. Ewing to describe a common gambling behavior where a gambler believes that they will be able to stop a risky behavior while still engaging in it. Also, known as “I`ll stop when I`m ahead”.

Sin cities

Cities known to cater to various vices such as gambling or sex-related services. The most-famous sin city in the U.S. is Las Vegas, of course. Sin cities in Europe include Ibiza (Spain), Amsterdam (The Netherlands), Prague (Czech Republic), and Soho in London, England.

Las Vegas

A crimp is a bend made intentionally on a corner of a playing card to ease their identification.

Bingo wings

It`s probably the funniest gambling term ever coined. It is used to describe the hanging-swinging fat on a woman`s upper arms. When older women in bingo halls used to shout “Bingo!” and shake their hands in excitement, the hanging fat under their arms would swing, hence the bingo wing. We even did our best to find a gif for it too…

It`s horrible, we know, but funny nonetheless.

In gambling, the word natural is used to refer to several good outcomes for the player; that is, the shortest and fastest possible way for a player to win or achieve a good score. In blackjack, for example, the best outcome for the player would be to reach the score of 21 with only two cards, of which one is necessarily an ace, while the other could be any of the 10-valuted cards (the 10, the Jack, the Queen or the King).

Snake eyes

It is a term used when the outcome of rolling dice is a single pip on each die. The two dots resemble two eyes. The notions of betrayal and deception often associated with snakes also explain why the term is more generally used to refer to bad luck, because in most dice games the single pip on each die is the lowest possible outcome.
